Muziris is where St. Thomas the Apostle is said to have first landed in 52AD, bringing Christianity to India. It is here that India’s first church, Mar Thoma Church and the first mosque, Cheraman Juma Masjid, are located. The city traded in spices, silk, and precious stones; with exports to Rome, Greece, Egypt, etc. Enriched by trade contacts. The earliest Jewish settlers in India landed on the Malabar Coast and flourished in Muziris.. The first ever mosque in India was also built here. It was the ancient Muziris Port that was operational thirty kilometers North of Cochin, until it was destroyed by a the floods in the nearby river periyar.
