TASTE OF COCHIN
Cooking Tour with Local Family.
This is not just a tour, but also a learning experience with a Kerala family
Kerala's cuisine, from the southwest of India, is deeply connected to its history, geography, demography, and culture. It features a wide variety of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes, often prepared with fish, poultry, and red meat, typically accompanied by rice. Common ingredients include chilies, curry leaves, mustard seeds, turmeric, tamarind, and asafetida.
Kerala, known as the "Land of Spices," has traded spices with Europe and many ancient civilizations since the earliest historical records. As a major production area of spices for thousands of years, the region frequently uses black pepper, cardamom, clove, ginger, and cinnamon. Traditional Kerala cuisine is predominantly vegetarian and includes Kerala Sadya, an elaborate banquet prepared for festivals and ceremonies. However, contemporary Kerala food also features non-vegetarian dishes. Due to its rich trading heritage, various cuisines have blended with indigenous Kerala dishes, with foreign recipes adapted to local tastes. Coconuts, which grow abundantly in Kerala, are commonly used for thickening and flavoring dishes through grated coconut and coconut milk. Additionally, Kerala's long coastline
and numerous rivers have fostered a strong fishing industry, making seafood a common part of meals.
